RIO holds a unique place in the shotgun shell manufacturing world in that we are one of the few companies that controls and manufactures all of the components used in a shotgun shell. The key benefit for shooters is a quality product at an affordable price. The Wing & Target was designed specifically for the recreational shotgunner that wants to spend time breaking clays with friends and family. Recognized as soft shooting, clean burning because of our single-based powder and consistent from box to box the Wing & Target is soon to become a weekend favorite.
RIO’s “Blue-Box” Target loads have been a staple for target shooters in the US for over 15 years now. The Target line family encompasses the needs of each specific discipline of target shooter with multiple shot sizes in 7.5, 8, 8.5 and 9 as well as specific payloads and velocities. If you are starting in Trap the favorite load is the 1 oz of 8 shot at 1,210 fps our TLT28. Handicap Trap shooters prefer the TT32 with a faster velocity of 1,250 fps and larger 1 1/8oz load in 7.5, 8 or 8.5. The Target line also has specific Skeet Loads in 9, several 24 Gram International Loads, Sporting Clays, as well as 3-Gun. All target shooters appreciate the quality of the powders produced by RIO for their cleanliness, burning consistency and lower pressures for the least amount of recoil and best patterns possible.
Sporting Clays and FITASC have become one of the fastest growing shooting sports in the country over the past 20 years, and it’s easy to see why. Each station is unique with multiple possible solutions. Which shot size to use, 7.5 to 9? Which speed of shell? Which payload size is needed? Which barrel choke to use for this distance? And, answers vary upon the person you ask. RIO has created a line to help answer some of these questions; generally, faster with the same or less recoil is good. Having a consistent velocity across shot sizes and payloads is also a good thing. The new Star Team Evo was developed to provide a range of higher-quality loads using magnum shot for best patterning, and special powder blends to deliver faster shot across all three payloads and shot sizes with less recoil. Most importantly, the velocity consistency from one payload or shot size to another allows a Sporting Clays shooter to choose the best load for a situation without compromising similar felt recoil or similar speed.
Shotgun sports have evolved in many unique and interesting ways over the past 100 years; from shooting glass balls thrown in the air to shooting mini-helicopters zipping at all directions at once. The need for specific shells for these new games has been a fun challenge for shotshell manufactures as we set our engineers out to solve the sometime impossible. With more than 100 years of shotshell experience, RIO has a wide range of loads and products that meet a specific type of need; or some that are just fun to bring back. Paper shotgun shells have a certain mystique to them. Some trap shooters will tell you they pattern better than plastic, some shooters just like the feel of them in your hand like they prefer leather carseats over fabric. This year RIO’s Vintage 1896 paper shotshell line will release with the most popular pigeon and target loads.
Sporting Clays has been the modern driver of innovation for new shells. The need to break hard clays like rabbits as well as providing a large pattern of shot for super-fast, close-crossing minis is often a challenge for a single load. The challenge becomes even more difficult when the shell is being shot out of a fixed-choke gun; or even a semi-auto where the shooter must choke for either far or close. RIO’s Spreader loads help the shooter solve some of the target setter’s tricky presentations. The new Speed Spreader has a large 1 oz payload of 9 at 1,350 fps. The special spreader wad evenly disperses the shot to provide a larger pattern than a standard shotshell. The special Wabbit Wacker is designed for those waskily rabbit targets that bounce and bop down the course seeming to dodge every pellet shot at them. This spreader has 1 1/8 oz of 7.5 at 1,350fps with our spreader wad giving the shooter an extra ounce of help for the unpredicted jumps of Mr. Bunny.
The use of lead shot in target loads has been the most common shot choice due to its performance and cost, however there is a growing need for a non-lead target load for many wetland areas. RIO is one of the world’s leader’s in non-lead target loads with a full line of steel shot cartridges for those areas where lead is a concern. The Target Load BlueSteel in both 12 ga and 20 ga uses special wads and powders designed for the difference in steel shot verses traditional lead shot.
